So I was giving some thought to our official new party name, Dragon Force. Some basic history that I just made up:
The name Dragon Force dates to the height of the Empire of Nerath, when the expanding human dominion came into conflict with the powerful dragonborn clans of the North. Though the dragonborn empire of Arkhosia had been shattered centuries before in the devastating Weeping War against the infernal forces of Bael Turath, the descendants of Arkhosia's once-proud nobility still ruled the mountains and forests of their homeland, though now little more than wandering bands of raiders and nomads.
One by one, Nerath challenged the dragonborn clans, and one by one the clans fell. Despairing that his people refused to unite to face the expanding human empire, Raegar—called Raegar the Red, Flameborn, Wintertouched, Skyrider*—went deep into the wilds to find the true path. After fifty days and fifty nights in the cold snows, he emerged from the wilds riding a red dragon.
Though some of the dragonborn clans refused Raegar's all, most put aside their enmities and agreed to fight beneath Raegar's banner, and together bitterly resisted the encroachment of the Nerathi legions. Raegar and his dragon led every attack, and beneath axe and flame the human soldiers broke and ran time and time again. The dragonborn were too few to stem the Nerathi tide forever, and each battle left fewer and fewer dragonborn to fight the next, but Raegar defied the humans and resolved to fight to the last.
The young emperor of Nerath called for a champion to destroy Raegar and his dragon, and one knight after another challenged Raegar and met his death. Finally a champion arrived one day from across the sea, riding a dragon of her own. Lady Steel, they called her, the White Witch, the Knight of Winds, the Sea Queen, and half a hundred names besides—but whatever she might be called, she rode north on dragonback to challenge the power of the ascendant dragonborn.
Lady Steel met Raegar in the cold northern skies and battled for a day and a night and another day. When both were bloodied and burned and near to death, their dragons clashed and tumbled to the ground, too injured to fly, but the Sea Queen and the Red Rider fought on. Finally, at sunset, Raegar yielded, seeing that he had been beaten, and waited for death. But Lady Steel refused to kill her enemy, who had fought with bravery and honor, cunning and skill. Instead, she charged him to stop fighting the Empire of Nerath, which could only result in the extinction of his race, and to bring to the expanding empire the wisdom of his people and the virtues of their ancient ways.
Raegar agreed, and together they became the first Knights of Nerath who made it their mission to defend the frontiers of the empire. Like Lady Steel, the Knights of the North had many names. Because they stayed so often in the cold wilds, they were often called the Knights of the North, or the Cold Warriors for their ferocity and determination. But because they were led by two legendary champions who fought on dragonback, and because so many of those protectors were the very dragonborn who once threatened the empire, they were most often known simply as:
DRAGON FORCE.
*Historical note: most surviving dragonborn clans include the legendary Raegar as one of their ancestors, in the same way that most claim to be descendants of Arkhosian royalty. Krieg’s clan, Snow Wolf, is one of these.
